Customizing a
Training Program
While some organizations find the right fit with pre-existing
training modules, others call for a program that accommodates
their specific goals and training needs. Rayner & Associates
will customize training to meet your organization's expectations
so that you can achieve the results you require.
When we approach the customization of our materials, we first
try to determine the extent of modification/creation that will
be required. To help us assess the scope of a project, we have
created a model showing three levels of customization:
LEVEL ONE
Requires only superficial changes to the existing core product.
Examples include:
- Wording changes
- Changes to the order of the modules
- Changes to the cover and title page so that it has the appearance
of an "in-house" product
LEVEL TWO
Requires the addition of models, processes, case studies and
practices already utilized by the client organization. Typically
the client provides the information/models/case studies, and
we provide writing, editing, formatting and strategies for teaching
the additional elements. Examples include:
- The common problem solving steps already in use throughout
the organization
- The addition of a case study specific to the industry of
the client organization
- The addition of references to and examples of communication
standards already utilized by the client
- The deletion of references to technology or resources not
available within the client organization
LEVEL THREE
Requires the creation of an entirely new module or training program
in order to better address specific client issues. We typically
conduct the research; develop a detailed outline of how the module
or program is to be structured; write it up; create the accompanying
graphics; format the document, overhead slides, or other training
materials; run a pilot; and make improvements based on the pilot
feedback.
We can provide any level of customization to our existing
products that your organization deems necessary. We can turn
around changes very quickly--in fact, we consider our ability
to create customized training offerings a strong competency of
the firm. Obviously, the more Level Two and Level Three customization
work required, the greater the amount of time and cost for completion.
In addition to customizing participant materials, we also
create corresponding trainer manuals and training aids.

Examples of customized training programs
(all of these required some degree of Level 3 customization):
Leadership Workshop
A manufacturing facility required training for its front line
managers following a plant redesign. Through a series of interviews
and organizational assessments, Rayner & Associates created
a workshop that included the following modules: 13 Disciplines
Assessment, Team Charter, Boundary Conditions, Operating Guidelines,
Meetings, Time Management, Team Communication, Decision Making,
Rewards, Accountability. Additional activities were designed
specifically for the organization.
Team Training
Rayner & Associates developed this training program to help
teams at a high tech corporation fulfill their mission. Training
included: Team Charter, Boundary Conditions, Operating Guidelines,
Change Management and Team Reorganization, Problem Solving Tools,
Decision Making and Filters, Team Communication, 360 Reviews
and Accountability.
Quality Workshop
Through a series of interviews with a cross-section of the organization,
Rayner & Associates identified several key issues that had
an impact on quality performance. The accompanying workshop for
first-line managers included a quality simulation, presentations
by customers and quality inspectors, manager roles and responsibilities,
development of a quality plan and a cross-training plan, and
a senior staff question-and-answer panel.
Project Team Leader Workshop
Rayner & Associates designed training materials specifically
for the leaders of project teams in an organization's worldwide
training group. Because project teams have a short lifespan,
the workshop dealt with specific issues identified by the organization
and was structured around three phases of team development: start-up,
performance, and conclusion.
